Aspen by Private Jet: From New York, Atlanta and Miami

Destinations · November 5, 2026

Flight times, the right aircraft and the airport details that matter for Aspen, from New York, Atlanta and Miami, plus what the 2027 runway closure means for your plans.

Few destinations reward private travel quite like Aspen. Aspen/Pitkin County Airport (ASE) sits about three miles from downtown, so the time between landing and your first evening in town is measured in minutes, not hours. It is also one of the most demanding airports in the country, which is why the right aircraft, crew and timing matter as much as the destination itself. Here is how we plan Aspen trips from three of our most requested starting points: New York, Atlanta and Miami.

From New York

At roughly 1,500 nautical miles, New York to Aspen is a true cross-country flight, and the westbound leg often runs into strong winter headwinds. A midsize or super midsize jet makes the trip nonstop with room for a full party, their luggage and their skis, and a stand-up cabin makes four hours pass easily. Light jets can reach Aspen from New York, but in winter they usually need a fuel stop on the way west, which is why we rarely recommend them for this route.

From Atlanta

Atlanta is one of the most convenient starting points for Aspen. Departing from DeKalb-Peachtree or Fulton County, you avoid the main terminal entirely and are in the mountains in about three hours. A light jet suits couples and small parties traveling light. For families or groups with ski bags and winter luggage, we recommend a midsize jet, whose larger baggage hold and cabin make the trip far more comfortable.

From Miami

From South Florida, the journey trades palm trees for powder in a little over four hours. Opa-locka, Miami Executive and Fort Lauderdale each offer quick, private departures. A midsize or super midsize jet flies the route nonstop, and a super midsize cabin adds the space to work, dine or rest along the way.

What makes Aspen different

Aspen’s airport sits at 7,820 feet in a narrow mountain valley, with a single 8,006-foot runway and some of the steepest approaches in the country. That shapes every Aspen trip we plan:

  • Experienced crews. We arrange Aspen flights with operators whose crews are experienced in mountain operations.
  • A 95-foot wingspan limit. Some of the largest business jets, including the Gulfstream G650 and G700 and the Bombardier Global 7500, cannot use the airport. Large-cabin jets such as the Dassault Falcon 8X and Bombardier Challenger 650 fit comfortably.
  • Performance at altitude. On warm summer days especially, the thin air can limit how much an aircraft carries. We account for your party, luggage and gear when we recommend an aircraft.
  • Operating hours. The airport is closed from 11 p.m. to 7 a.m., so we schedule arrivals with a comfortable margin, particularly on short winter days.
  • Weather. When a winter storm closes in, flights may divert to Eagle County (EGE), about 70 miles and an hour and a half by car from Aspen, or to Rifle (RIL), a little over an hour away. We plan ground transportation for either, so a diversion is an inconvenience rather than a disruption.
  • Peak weeks. Aircraft parking at Aspen is limited during the holidays, Presidents’ Day weekend and spring break. Booking early secures the best options, and on the busiest days an aircraft may drop you off and park at a nearby airport until your return, which we build into your quote.

Important: Aspen’s airport closes for most of 2027

Aspen/Pitkin County Airport will close to all flights, including private aircraft, from 11 p.m. on Sunday, April 4, 2027 until 7 p.m. on Friday, November 19, 2027, while its runway is rebuilt and widened. The airport plans to reopen in time for the 2027–28 ski season.

What this means for your plans:

  • Late-season skiing. Aspen Mountain is scheduled to stay open until April 18, 2027, two weeks after the airport closes. For trips in those final weeks, we fly you into Eagle County or Rifle and arrange the drive.
  • Summer 2027. Aspen’s summer festivals, concerts and long mountain days go on as usual, with every arrival through Eagle County or Rifle. Those airports will be busier than normal, so we recommend reserving early.

When to go

Winter. For the 2026–27 season, Aspen Mountain and Snowmass are scheduled to open on Thanksgiving Day, November 26, 2026, with Aspen Highlands and Buttermilk following on December 12. The holidays and Presidents’ Day weekend are the busiest weeks of the year, while January and early March pair excellent snow with a quieter town.

Summer. July and August bring wildflowers, hiking and Aspen’s celebrated food, music and ideas festivals, with cool mountain evenings that make a welcome escape from Southern heat. Remember that in 2027, summer visits arrive through Eagle County or Rifle.
